A long, long, time ago, when a computer to most was Robbie the Robot from "Lost in Space" (or "Forbidden Planet", for you Sci-Fi movie buffs), artists used to draw with a primitive stylus tool called a Rapidograph which placed permanent ink on actual paper. Yes, those were happy and carefree days...I still had the majority of my hair, and you could sometimes buy 5 cartons of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese for a buck. I had lots of time to enjoy life then, and to plumb the depths of the human psyche. I'm not sure what that has to do with this comic, but it had to be said! Anyway, I occasionally would put pen to paper then to entertain myself and others, usually taking off from actual people or events. My friend Dale Lyberger had this dog...or perhaps the dog just lived around his house. Strider was a mangy old collie who seemed only marginally aware of his surroundings; non-the-less, he always appeared to be supremely happy and content.....perhaps he was on to something we can only guess it! Some unkind folks speculated that this was because there wasn't much room in his head for brains...but I believe this opinion to be the result of envy, pure and simple. Occasionally Strider would wander downtown, deftly avoiding the freight trains, to make new friend and visit old ones, until someone would say "Strider, go home"...and he would. The old Lyberger place is gone now (urban renewal, they called it), and Strider has probably gone on to that big doghouse in the sky....but his memory and spirit lives on. If he had only lived in another era, who knows, he might have been as big as that Taco Bell dog! I would like to dedicate this feature to my old pal, Michele, and her mother Beverly, who both greatly supported and encouraged these early efforts.
